Summary for those in a hurry

Less than an hour's drive from Saint-Vincent-sur-Jard, the Île de Noirmoutier is the perfect family getaway. Passage of the Gois, iconic beaches, salt marshes and bike rides make for a day full of discoveries. An ideal outing during a stay in a group gîte in the Vendée, combining nature, traditions and shared memories.

Noirmoutier, an island to remember

Noirmoutier is the kind of place you remember long after you've returned home.

Perhaps because it all begins with a rather unusual crossing.

Perhaps because the pace is different.

Or perhaps because the island has managed to retain this rare blend of nature, tradition and simplicity.

When you come to the Vendée as a family, Noirmoutier is one of those getaways that appeals to everyone. It's an adventure for children. Adults find it soothing.

The Passage du Gois: a spectacular entrance to the island

It's impossible to talk about Noirmoutier without mentioning the Passage du Gois. This legendary 4.2 kilometre road links the mainland to the island... but only at low tide. Twice a day, it disappears beneath the ocean.

The first crossing is always impressive. You move forward slowly, surrounded by water, with that unique feeling of being between two worlds.

At low tide, the Gois is also a great place to go fishing on foot: clams, cockles, crabs... A real treat for the children, as long as you check the tide times.

The beaches of Noirmoutier: gentle elegance

Noirmoutier is renowned for the quality and diversity of its beaches. The most emblematic is the Plage des Dames. Its white cabins, calm waters and pine-lined promenade give it an almost timeless charm.

It's an ideal beach with children: the water is often gentler, the atmosphere soothing and the setting reassuring.

For those who prefer a wilder atmosphere, the beaches in the south of the island offer wide open spaces, perfect for feeling alone in the world.

The salt marshes: a different way of understanding the island

Noirmoutier isn't just a seaside island. It's also a land of traditions. The salt marshes have shaped the landscape for centuries. Visiting these areas reveals the patient work of the salt workers, the salt harvest and the fragile balance between man and nature.

Children are often fascinated by the geometric basins, the tools and the repeated gestures. And they almost always leave with a little bag of salt as a souvenir.

Cycling the island from a child's point of view

Noirmoutier is a wonderful place to discover by bike. The cycle paths are flat, numerous and safe. They cross the marshes, skirt the coast and pass the white houses that are so typical of the island.

With a trailer or children's bikes, the ride becomes a real pleasure. An ice cream stop at the Port de l'Herbaudière is an almost natural way to see the boats and enjoy the harbour atmosphere.

Noirmoutier tasting: bonnotte and the flavours of the island

It's impossible to leave Noirmoutier without mentioning its best-known speciality: the bonnotte. This early potato, harvested by hand, is grown in soil rich in sea spray. It is eaten simply, with a little butter and salt... and everyone agrees.

Noirmoutier is also :

  • oysters,
  • fresh fish,
  • simple but real products.
