The Alpine Rosy: a rare and precious guest at Domaine de la Coutardière

Summary for those in a hurry

The Alpine Rosalia is a rare and protected insect, recognisable by its blue-grey colour and long antennae. Its presence at the Domaine de la Coutardière, in the Vendée, has been reported by travellers and shows the balance of our garden. A discovery that offers families a real lesson in nature, to be experienced simply, during a stay in a group gîte in Saint-Vincent-sur-Jard.

When nature reveals itself, even in our absence

I wasn't there that day. Travellers staying at the Domaine wrote to me. They sent me a message. Then a photo. «We think we saw a very rare insect in the garden.»

There was no doubt about it. That distinctive blue-grey colour. Those long black-ringed antennae.

An Alpine Rosalie. They had looked at it curiously, without touching it, and then they had simply told me. Like sharing good news. And even from a distance, I felt a simple, gentle pride. Seeing this protected insect choose our garden is a sign. A sign that this place is alive, respected and preserved.

The Alpine Rosalie, an insect as beautiful as it is discreet

The Alpine Rosalia is a rare beetle, protected at European level. Its blue-grey, almost metallic colour and long, ringed antennae make it instantly recognisable.

But it's not just its beauty that makes it so precious. It's what it tells us: it lives only in rich, balanced environments, where old trees still have their place. In other words, where nature still breathes.

A living garden, not a static setting

It's no coincidence that she chose our garden. At Domaine de la Coutardière, I've never tried to smooth out nature. There are corners that are a little wild. Old woodland. Areas that we leave alone. Children and our visitors often notice the details: a butterfly on a wall, a hedgehog under a hedge, and sometimes... an Alpine Rosalie...

Why is the Alpine Rosalie so rare?

The Rosalie depends on old trees, particularly beech and dead wood. With urbanisation and the gradual disappearance of old-growth forests, its habitat is shrinking. When it appears in a garden, it's a sign that the environment is healthy, balanced and respected. And for me, it's a simple but true source of pride to see nature choosing this place.

A family nature lesson

This observation reminds us of one essential thing: nature needs to be respected, discovered and experienced. There's no need for screens or busy schedules. Just an attentive gaze and a little silence. Children learn to put their eyes on what lives around them, to observe with curiosity, and to understand the fragility of certain treasures like the Rosalie.
