Summary for those in a hurry

Saint-Vincent-sur-Jard is a coastal village in the Vendée, steeped in history and ideal for family holidays. With its natural beaches, coastal path dotted with historic remains, heritage marked by Georges Clemenceau and cycle routes such as the Vélodyssée, everything invites you to slow down. An authentic place, perfect for a group holiday in a gîte near the ocean.

A family story before being a destination

For me, Saint-Vincent-sur-Jard is not a place you discover. It's a place you pass on. It's the commune where Ghyslain grew up, surrounded by his parents and grandparents. A village where generations have lived with the ocean in the background, where the land and the sea have always been part of everyday life.

This is also where my mother was born. This is where my grandparents lived. And before them, my great-grandparents, who settled in Saint-Vincent-sur-Jard at a time when the village was still very rural.

At the beginning of the XXᵉ century, an illustrious man came to stay here regularly: Georges Clemenceau. My great-grandparent met him, spoke to him, several times. Not like talking to a historical figure, but like talking to a man from the village, deeply attached to this corner of the Vendée coast.

So when I talk about Saint-Vincent-sur-Jard, I'm talking about an inhabited, living place, where history and daily life have long intersected.

The House of Georges Clemenceau: a living memory and an exceptional garden

The House of Georges Clemenceau is one of the town's major historical landmarks. Georges Clemenceau stayed here from 1919, after the First World War, and spent the last years of his life here until his death in 1929.

He chose this simple house, facing the ocean, to retreat, write and observe the sea. What is less well known is that the gardens were designed with the help of Claude Monet, a close friend of Clemenceau. The garden is not just decorative: it was conceived as a space for contemplation, in direct contact with the light and the landscape.

From the garden, the view over the bay is simply magnificent. The ocean opens up before you, changing colour as the hours and seasons go by. A peaceful, powerful place, where it's easy to see why Clemenceau loved coming here so much.

The beaches of Saint-Vincent-sur-Jard: between freedom and memory

The beaches of Saint-Vincent-sur-Jard have long been a place of work for fishermen and villagers. Today, they offer families wide open spaces:

  • games in the sand,
  • walks at low tide,
  • observation of marine life.

They have retained the wild character that sets them apart from some of the more urbanised resorts on the Vendée coast.

The coastal path: walking through history

The coastal path follows a coastline shaped by time, wind and tides.

But as you walk along, you'll also come across more recent remnants of history. Bunkers and blockhouses built during the Second World War are still visible along the route. They are a reminder that this peaceful landscape has also been marked by conflict.

For children and adults alike, it's a practical way of learning about history, as part of a nature walk.

Cycling: discover the region at your own pace

Saint-Vincent-sur-Jard is an ideal starting point for family cycling trips. The Vélodyssée crosses the commune and, from Saint-Vincent-sur-Jard, you can easily reach Jard-sur-Mer and Longeville-sur-Mer, cycling along the ocean or through wooded countryside.

The slopes are safe and accessible, making it the perfect activity for children. Another way to discover the Vendée, slower, gentler, more immersive.

Saint-Vincent church: witness to centuries gone by

At the heart of the village, the church of Saint-Vincent has stood guard since the Middle Ages. Remodelled over the centuries, it bears witness to the spiritual and social life of the village. A simple, unostentatious place, but deeply rooted in local history.
