Vendée specialities: flavours to share with your family on holiday
Summary for those in a hurry
The Vendée is a land of simple, generous cuisine. Préfou, mogettes, Vendée ham, Vendée brioche, Guittière oysters and Noirmoutier bonnotte are just some of the must-taste dishes to try on a family holiday. Authentic flavours, easy to share, that create memories around the table.
The Vendée, a cuisine that brings people together
When you go on holiday with your family, eating well is part of the fun. And here in the Vendée, the cuisine doesn't try to impress. It's real, generous and sincere. Local cuisine, made to be shared.
Around a large table, after a day spent outdoors, bread is cut, dishes are served and tastes are savoured. Discussions drag on. The children peck away. And without realising it, memories are made.
Prefou: the quintessential Vendée aperitif
If there's one speciality everyone can agree on, it's préfou. A bread topped with butter and garlic, baked in the oven and served piping hot. It's cut into pieces. It's shared. And it always disappears too quickly.
It's often the first taste of Vendée that you discover when you arrive. And the one you try to rediscover when you get home.
Mogettes and Vendée ham: comforting simplicity
Mogettes, those melting white beans, are an integral part of Vendée cuisine. Served with Vendée ham, they make a simple, nourishing and reassuring dish. It's a dish that recounts the countryside, the meals of yesteryear and the friendly atmosphere.
And grilled mogettes, on a slice of bread rubbed with garlic and butter, are a real holiday souvenir.
Vendée brioche: the taste of quiet mornings
The brioche vendéenne is one of those pleasures we immediately associate with holidays. Soft and slightly sweet, sometimes flavoured with orange blossom, it's the perfect accompaniment to late breakfasts, impromptu snacks and long, drawn-out mealtimes.
You share it without thinking. And very often, a brioche goes back into the boot when you leave.
Guittière oysters: the iodine of Vendée
Just a few kilometres away, the Port de la Guittière is a Mecca for local oyster farming. The oysters here are bred in the Payré estuary, giving them a milder, slightly sweeter flavour.
They are eaten simply, often directly from the producer. While the adults enjoy their meal, you can look out over the harbour, the docks and the boats. An authentic moment, rooted in the region.
Bonnotte de Noirmoutier: a rare and seasonal product
It's impossible to talk about the specialities of the Vendée without mentioning the bonnotte de Noirmoutier. This early potato is harvested by hand from sandy soil enriched by sea spray.
Its flesh is meltingly soft and delicately sweet. Available for only a few weeks in spring, it is very easy to cook: a little butter, a pinch of salt... and nothing else.
Sweet delicacies from Vendée: tits and sweet delights
Fion vendéen (or flan vendéen) is a traditional dessert made with milk, eggs and vanilla, sometimes flavoured with rum or cinnamon. Thick, melting and comforting, it's one of those desserts we associate with childhood and family meals.
Simple. And effective.

The Domaine de la Coutardière, where you can share these moments
At Domaine de la Coutardière, our group gîte in the Vendée, the kitchen takes centre stage. It's where we prepare meals together. It's where we put down our market bags. It's a place where you can reflect on the day over a simple dish.
Because often, the best holiday memories are not the ones you visit... but the ones you share around the table.
Vendée cuisine is not about impressing. It seeks to bring people together. It's about local produce, passing on knowledge and simple pleasures.
And when you discover it with your family, on holiday, it takes on even more meaning. Because when it comes down to it, it's often these flavours that bring us back to basics long afterwards.
